Marina Luri Events is a worldwide, full-service event planning, design and production company and Marina and her team were kind enough to guest write a Luau Party Idea for our loyal readers. Check out what she and her team created below and learn to party like a pro!
Looking for a fun graduation party idea? Heading to a Jimmy Buffet concert? Or just looking to do a Luau party? With a few Windy City Novelty items, some tape, glue and a little creativity – you can transform a space in no time.
Start with a focal point – we used our custom made tikki bar and built around it. We used a grass table skirt as a back drop and added some fun and colorful lanterns. You can tie these or tape them to a wall, pergola or tree.
Next, we dressed up the bar and the glasses! We used cutouts of tropical birds, silk flowers and palm leaves to dress up the bar. Then we used grass skirts to dress up our margarita light up glasses. When guests arrived, we had “dancing” sharks in the cups but by nightfall, everyone had a drink. Hint – glue dots came in handy when sticking the cutouts & flowers onto the bar
The palm leaves that covered the top of the bar were not only decorative but useful in keeping drinks from slipping off of our surfboard bar top. These palm leaves can also be used as placemats and/or underneath a centerpiece for a more finished look.
The focal point of the bar was two flamingos in a grass covered sono tube. The tube was purchased at our local hardware store then covered in artificial turf (with hot glue). Inside the tube we placed floral foam and stuck the flamingos inside. We covered the top of the tube with floral leis. We added a couple of silk flowers to the outside of the tube with hot glue for a more tropical effect. Once the bar opened for the party, the flamingo “centerpiece” was moved to a table. Similar centerpieces were made with a combination of one or two flamingos.
To complete the party, head to a beach or purchase play sand from a hardware store. Add some tikki torches, candles and a bamboo pole for a limbo dance competition and prepare to have fun!
